It is derived from the emotional spectrum. According to DC, they exist for three billion year and have been surviving numerous internal and foreign conflicts. The Green Lantern Corps are dedicated to protect life in every form, established by the guardians, which is a race of immortals residing on the plant, thousands of years ago in the DC universe. The guardians of the Universe are the leaders and funders of the Green Lantern Corps. Officers are carefully chosen for their super ability to overcome fear. Each Green Lantern Corps is provided with a power ring, which is a weapon that grants the use of unbelievable abilities directed by the wearer’s willpower. It is regarded as the mightiest weapon in the universe. Currently, they have 7200 members serving the universe, and have two representatives for all the 3600 sectors in the DC universe. They have their centrally located headquarters on the planet Oa which is a fictional planet in the DC universe. The planet OA is the place from where the guardians administer the Green Lantern Corps
To fight against all sorts of menaces, and enforce their will the Guardians had created sentinels called the Man hunters around 3.5 billion years ago. The Man hunters were viewed as incapable to fight back fearlessly. They also rebelled against the Guardians who decided to create a newest force of soldiers who would be living beings. They would have free will and a very strong moral character. The power ring would add strength to their character and drive them to work for good. The name of the Green Lantern Corps bears significance. The power rings they wear radiate green beams of energy. Also during their inception, the constabulary was seen to have carried a lantern which was lit with green chemical flame. These are the two main reasons behind their nomenclature.
The Green Lantern Corps were created to symbolize law and justice throughout the universe. Initially there were few agents which eventually increased to a substantial amount 1000 years ago. The main enemies of the guardians were the Darkseid, who were the galactic tyrant. The guardians wanted to save their planet Apokolips against these, Green Lantern Corps were created under the leadership of Raker. Among the other leaders, Hal Jordan and John Stewart are names worth mentioning. The latter is the leader of the newest form of Green Lantern Corps called the alpha lanterns. After a series of crisis, birth and rebirth of their own kind the Green Lantern Corps have been able to create an impression in the mind of the comic readers and are equally popular among the kids as well as the elders. Their strength, masculinity, zeal to fight against the evil and will power has given them a place in the hearts of every comic lover. They symbolize power and protection of mankind.
